Planning ahead is an excellent idea and there is plenty that you can take care of during the colder months here in our service area of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. If you want to be sure to be completely prepared for a Spring house move, there are things you can do now to make the process easier.

Take Care of Both Interior and Exterior Items

Shrubbery needs to be considered if it’s close to the house. Valuable or sentimental plants should be transplanted prior to the move to preserve them. Landscaping items, flower bed accessories, rocks, and pavers should be moved to avoid damage. Outdoor showers, lean-tos, or other utility areas will need to be removed. Steps should be removed before the house moving begins. Also any decks and porches that are not to be lifted must be demolished or removed before the move. Mark out septic systems, leach fields, and underground utility lines for safety and to avoid damage. Gas and utility companies will need to be contacted as these utilities will need to be shut off. Plan to move everything such as valuables and irreplaceable items out of the home before it is lifted or moved. Some people have found damage to items that they have left.

Talk To Your Neighbors

Secure your neighbor’s permission to use their property if necessary. This is important  if your home is very close to the property line. Create a plan for fixing any ruts or damage that might occur from equipment driving on the neighbor’s property. Fences around the house will need to be removed as well as any property line fence that is near the structure. Neighbors may need to sign off on your house move. Now is also the time to research any rules or bylaws in your HomeOwner’s Association to learn to see if a move can even be done.

Learn Your Town’s Codes and Laws

Many towns may also have a height limit or a water requirement. You may also need to have a set of moving and engineering plans for the permitting process. Chimneys can be moved along with the house depending on the size of the road and if the chimney will make the structure too tall and cause a hazard to wires that are over the road.

While this can seem like a lot of things to remember, we take the time to review the house moving process with you and go over what needs to be done at your job. There is plenty of time to prepare for Spring. A seamless experience is what we strive for. Call Eastman Building Movers today to get started with your house move.
