Learn More about Jacking and Cribbing

As we begin 2023, we’ve fielded some questions from homeowners in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut asking us if their homes are good candidates for jacking and cribbing. All buildings can be jacked or cribbed if their structural condition is in order. Eastman Building Movers inspects each home or structure before we make a final determination, but we explain any reason we find that would preclude a building from being lifted.

The most common reasons that a homeowner considers jacking or cribbing a structurally sound building includes the following.

A new addition to the family or elderly relatives moving into the home calls for more space. If you don’t want to move or go through the hassle of looking for a new home, you can stay in your current home and choose to add an addition or build up. Lifting a home allows for a new floor to be added and it is often less expensive than the costs of purchasing a new home and moving.

The repair of cracks and other damage to a foundation can call for lifting and jacking the house to allow for access to repair or even repour the foundation.

Coastal homes might be located near a flood plain and jacking and cribbing a building can provide drainage and avoid flood damage. FEMA has certain guidelines for homeowners with homes near the water. Owners of these properties can save worry by lifting the home.

New construction, a community project, or new road or other infrastructure can mean zoning changes.Lifting the house and moving it to another location can save the house while these projects move forward. Zoning changes can also affect historic homes and they may be moved, also.
